All the staff from The Belfast Titanic Gift Shop online are very much looking forward to The Giro d’Italia coming to Northern Ireland later this week and in particular the start at the Titanic Quarter in Queen’s Island Belfast.
Everyone in Northern Ireland is extremely proud that we are hosting the first three stages of the world’s second largest bike race.
Around 200 of the world’s best cyclists will be coming from no fewer than 30 countries.
The Big Start also known as Grande Partenza will be from 9th – 11th May and will take in famous sites in Belfast, the world’s renowned Causeway Coastal Route and Glens finishing at the historic city of Armagh.
Many of the province’s famous landmarks have gone PINK the official colour of The Giro d’Italia. These include Belfast’s City Hall and the Ulster Museum. In Armagh the cricketers will be out on the Mall for the final of the NI section and will be wearing pink shirts. Many hotels where entrants are staying have changed their uniform to include the official colour.
The opening event “Come Meet the Rides” starts on Thursday 8th May and takes place in the grounds of the Belfast City Hall bang in the city centre. Each of the 22 teams will have their 9 riders presented to the public there.
Day one of the real action will be on Friday 9th May designated “Team Time Trial” and will start from the famous slipways at Titanic Belfast. This 21.7 Km route will take the cyclists to Parliament Buildings at Stormont home of the Northern Ireland Assembly returning to the city via Queens Bridge, Ormeau Road, Stranmillis finishing at the Belfast City Hall.
Saturday the race will start again from the Titanic Quarter and head northwards onto the Causeway Coastal Route passing the Old Bushmills Distillery (the world’s oldest), the Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce and Carrickfergus Castles and taking in the beautiful scenery of the Co Antrim Coast Road and Glens of Antrim.
The final day in Northern Ireland will be in Armagh city then going to what is known as the apple country after Co. Armagh’s famous apples passing through Newtownhamilton and Forkhill crossing into the Republic of Ireland and on to Dundalk and Dublin.
